All About Diamonds

Clarity is all about the PURITY measure

What is the Clarity of a Diamond?

Clarity evaluates the presence of internal flaws (inclusions) or surface imperfections (blemishes). These natural imperfections form during the diamond’s creation and can affect how light passes through the stone.

What Affects the Clarity of a Diamond?

Larger inclusions are more noticeable and can obstruct light, reducing brilliance. Multiple inclusions make the diamond appear cloudier, impacting their sparkle. Inclusions near the center are more visible and affect brilliance more than those near the edges. Yet some are so small that they can only be seen under magnification, making them virtually invisible to the naked eye. Overall, the fewer inclusions and blemishes, the higher the clarity grade and the more brilliant the diamond appears.

Slightly included 2. Inclusions are visible under 10x magnification and may be visible with unaided eye. More inclusions than SI1.

How is the Clarity of a Diamond Graded?

Grade Description
Flawless (FL) No visible inclusions or blemishes under 10x magnification
Internally Flawless (IF) No inclusions, only minor blemishes
Very, Very Slightly Included (VS1-VVS2) Inclusions difficult to detect under magnification
Very Slightly Included (VS1-VS2) Minor inclusions visible under 10x magnification
Slightly Included (SI1-SI2) Inclusions may be visible to the naked eye
Included (I1-I3) Visible inclusions that may affect brilliance

How Do You Choose a Diamond Based on Clarity?

Aim for VS2 or SI1 for Best Value
Very Slightly Included (VS2) and Slightly Included (SI1) diamonds typically have inclusions that are invisible to the naked eye but cost less than higher grades.

Consider Flawless or Internally Flawless for Perfection Seekers
Flawless (FL) and internally Flawless (IF) diamonds are extremely rare and valuable, but the difference in appearance may be negligible compared to lower grades.

Avoid Lower Clarity for Step-Cut Shapes
Emerald and asscher cuts have larger, open facets that reveal inclusions more easily. Opt for higher clarity in these shapes.

Brilliant Cuts Can Mask Inclusions
Round, princess, and cushion cuts reflect more light, helping to conceal minor inclusions.

Review the Diamond’s Plot in the Grading Report
Diamond certificates provide a clarity plot that shows the location and type of inclusions.

Pro Tip: For the best balance of beauty and value, opt for a VS2 or SI1 diamond, where imperfections are typically invisible to the naked eye. Higher clarity grades may not be necessary unless you choose a step-cut shape or seeking absolute perfection.
